Aim:

To provide participants with a basic knowledge and understanding of the impact of sexual abuse upon children and young people

Learning Objectives

  • To consider the impact of abuse and the needs of children in the context of our knowledge about adult offenders
  • To highlight the multi-agency tasks and duties in identifying, assessing and providing intervention for such children
  • To provide an overview of the key care, intervention needs of such children and the requirements of child protection
  • To help participants identify when specialist advice, consultation or intervention is needed
  • To provide participants with an understanding of the need to adopt an integrated approach to such work and how all professionals can have a role in responding to children’s therapeutic care / treatment needs

TARGET GROUP:

Those who work regularly with children and young people and professionals with particular responsibility for safeguarding children. This includes Health professionals, hospital and community health staff, family centre workers, teachers, education welfare officers, social workers, mental health and learning disability staff, operational managers at all levels, leaders or directors in NGOs employing staff or with responsibility for commissioning or delivering services, Nominated Safeguarding Children Officers and Advisers, named health and education professionals, police and other professionals needing the in-depth knowledge and skills in undertaking investigations including those working with complex cases.

PREREQUISITES:

Participants must have completed the core course – Understanding Safeguarding and Child Protection
