Your organisation’s Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) is the first point of contact on matters of safeguarding and child protection concerns for all staff members, families and other people who have access to your organisation. It is therefore essential that through a variety of written text and interactive exercises, you gain in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of the key roles and responsibilities of a DSO; what to do if they are concerned about a child and how to respond to a child who tells them about possible abuse

Learning Outcomes:

This is a classroom-based training course, by the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Understand and define the role and main responsibilities of the designated safeguarding lead
  • Address your own values regarding child abuse and the impact of these on professional practice
  • Describe your organisation’s overarching policy and identify the key legislation and guidance that informs your organisation’s policy and procedures for child safety and welfare
  • Recognise the steps your organisation needs to take to look after the safety and welfare of the children and young people within your organisation
  • Recognise the barriers that prevent children from reporting abuse and demonstrate an awareness of the emotional impact of safeguarding children
  • Know how to react and respond report and record effectively when a child reports abuse
  • What steps to take when concerns about a child have been raised and how to make the right decisions
  • Know the processes, following a referral to the Child Protection Unit and what role the school or college has in the multi-agency child protection process
  • Understand the issues connected to recording and sharing information, including confidentiality
  • Understand the barriers that prevent staff from reporting concerns, how to overcome them and ways in which the DSO can support staff
